Singing from the Heart of the Black Country

Our sole surviving founder member, Don Marsh, was appointed Secretary, a post he held for 21 years. David Lloyd George commenced a seventeen year period as Choir Chairman. Noel J M Lee was appointed Accompanist.

The present title of "The Gentlemen Songsters Male Voice Choir" was adopted and Tom Simmons was appointed Conductor with Noel J M Lee as his Deputy Conductor.

Irene Cox was appointed as Accompanist.

Albert Haynes was appointed Treasurer, a post he held for 22 years. Albert won a competition to design a Choir Logo - which originally appeared on the Choir Tie. The logo has evolved over the years as shown below

Noel J M Lee was appointed as Conductor when business commitments meant that Tom Simmons had to leave the area

George Porter became Deputy Conductor, a post he held until 1976, after which time he continued to sing with the choir.

A "Grand Concert" was held in the Wall Heath Community Centre. This was a precursor to our Annual Concerts. On this occasion, our guests were Edith Poles (Soprano) and Arthur Mallen (Tenor)

We produced our first recording during this year, and we held our first Autumn Annual Concert. The picture below was used on the cover of the lp

We were invited by our great friend, the late Bert Bissell MBE to sing at Vicar Street Methodist Church, Dudley, for the Anniversary Service of the Young Mens' Bible Class (of which Bert was Class Leader) This has become an annual event in the Choir's calendar ever since
